Families are created in many different shapes and sizes. Some have many children, some have only one child. Some have grandparents raising children and others only have one parent. Some have step-parents and step-siblings, and others have two biological parents and children. Whatever the size or shape of your family, we have a passion at Lotus Group to care for families. Family counseling typically revolves around those living in the same household; however, family counseling can be done with those who are family and not currently residing in the same residence. Most families who are interested in family counseling have noticed or are noticing concerning disruption in the relationships between family members. Usually, one person within the family is picked as the person “with a problem.” This person is often the reason families consider family counseling.
Family therapy can be conducted in many different ways. Most therapists like to gather background information about the family to help them assess the problems and stressors among the family members. It is important in family therapy that each family member is present and able to give their perspective of a problem. Each person in a family reacts differently to situations and useful information is gathered when hearing differing accounts of the family’s concerns.
Some family therapists hold separate sessions for parent(s)/guardian(s) and children/adolescents when working with families. Some therapists always keep the family members together when working. Numerous family therapy theories have been developed to help counselors work with families. Some theories work with communication, others work with the structure of the family, and some look at the patterns of interaction within a family that may have been learned from past generations. Regardless of the theory, the family therapist’s goal is to help the family function more productively.
Family therapy can be very vulnerable and unstable due to the nature of the relationships being examined. It is much easier to end other relationships than it is to end a relationship with a family member. The therapists at Lotus Group work to keep the environment safe for families seeking assistance so that productive work can be done and families begin to feel better.
