No Christmas Cheer? |
|
For so many this time of year is filled with the glad tidings of Christmas. However for some this is a miserable season. The stress of shopping and preparing for family to visit is distressing. Deadlines of buying gifts, sending holiday greetings, and decorating are just too much. When everyone is expressing excitement about the holidays you are wishing they would pass. If this describes what you are feeling then this is for you. Here's some strategies to address the holiday stress. Be open with your family and friends about how stressful this time of year is for you. Perhaps they will lower their expectations. Limit how many invitations you accept to Christmas parties so that you have less responsibilities. Take some time for yourself. Make an effort to set aside time to read a good book with a hot cup of cocoa by a warm fire. Rent a favorite Christmas movie and spend some time in your pajamas. There are many ways of making Christmas less stressful. Consider having Christmas dinner catered. Some restaurants are fairly affordable and prepare a nice dinner. Ask your family to draw names for a gift exchange to make shopping less time consuming. See if your co-workers are willing to simplify the traditional festivities. If you experience excessive anxiety (feeling of being overwhelmed or irritable or abnormally fatigued) then think about consulting a psychiatrist or therapist. Some psychiatrists will prescribe medications to help lessen anxiety. I find the temporary use of medications to be most appropriate in this situation. Now that you are aware that Christmas festivities don't have to be exhausting maybe this season will be more merry.
